Chapter 4: Dr. Iqbal Shidai's Return Travelogue
On the morning of 19th July 1947, I wandered in the elegant streets of Cairo in order to meet some Indians.
I had heard that there were many tailors from my home town-Sialkot. In Shareh Suleiman Pasha I entered a shop which belonged to a Mr. Abdul Ghani of Sialkot.
He received me very cordially and offered me “COCA COLA”.
That was all. Then I went to another tailor’s shop of one Mr, Mohammed Hassan. Both these men were from Mohallah Salu Guggar of Sialkot. They were cordial but did not pay much attention to me. I returned to my hotel.
At three in the afternoon, I was sitting in the hall of the hotel when I saw six or seven “Indian” among whom were Messrs. Abdul Ghani and Hassan Mohammed.
All of them approached the hall porter and asked him about the “Pakistani Leader” about whom they had read in the “Al Ahram the biggest Egyptian Paper.”
The Hall Porter pointed towards me.
They all came to me and shook hands. The two men whom I had met in the morning said that why I did not tell them that I was the “Pakistani Leader” I replied that I was not the leader.
They said that the paper “AL AHRAM” would never have been published in its column if I were not a leader.
FROM THAT MOMENT I BECAME A LEADER.
